Urgent message from the East Shelby County Farmers' Market 7/22

THE EAST SHELBY COUNTY FARMERS MARKET

My Photo

NEEDS YOUR HELP!!!

We are very excited to be celebrating our one month (4 consecutive weeks) anniversary at the East Shelby County Farmers' Market (ESCOFM)!!  We have 14 vendor spaces that are at capacity and a waiting list of vendors hoping to come to Collierville on Thursdays!  And, starting August 1, the ESCOFM will be open from 11:30 until 5:00 on SATURDAYS!!

This is wonderful and incredible, and vendors, customers, and volunteers are very happy!  But (and a big BUT here!) we need more volunteers to keep the ESCOFM the success it has been and help it to develop into the Amazing Farmers' Market it has the potential to be.

Please, if you are interested in volunteering in any way, let us know.  There are many ways to volunteer your time and services!   A few are listed below:

Help out at the volunteer tent (take email addresses for the newsletter, answer questions, give directions).  Our hours are Thursday 11:30 a.m. -- 7:00 p.m and Saturday 11:30 a.m. -- 5:00 p.m.  We need volunteers there from 10:30 set up until close at 7:00 p.m.  We will be happy to have you volunteer for as many or as few hours as you are able to spare.  We have a canopy for our volunteers - iced water is available - it's lots of fun! We check with the vendors to make sure they are happy and we ask customers questions for our Market improvement surveys.

Fundraising - we are working on setting up as a nonprofit.  We need help writing grants and eventually soliciting donations. We make no money from the vendors - any monetary donations we receive goes directly into advertising for the market.  Which leads to our next category...

Marketing/P.R. - We need to spread the word to as many people in our area - Collierville, Byhalia, Piperton, Germantown - as possible about our Farmers' Market.  Getting people out to the market helps Collierville's economy, especially the businesses around the square.

Are you part of a school club or civic organization that encourages volunteering?  We need your help!  Teenagers would be wonderful additions to the volunteer organization after school and on Saturday!

Eventually we hope to have cooking demonstrations, have information available about preserving the produce available at the ESCOFM, Farmers' market merchandise for sale, etc.

The Farmers' Market is truly one of the few opportunities to be involved in an activity that is win/win.  We offer local growers a venue to sell their produce.  Families from the East Shelby County area no longer have to drive across the county to buy locally-grown vegetables.  Families are introduced to businesses near the market and hopefully the increased traffic increases nearby businesses' revenue. Then businesses around the square refer customers to the farmers' market, bringing customers back to the square another day.  We would love to have you as a part of this endeavor!

If you would be willing to volunteer, please send an email to eshelbycofm@gmail.com with VOLUNTEER on the subject line.  Please include how you would like to volunteer and when and a phone number.

Please consider helping.  The continued sucess of the EAST SHELBY COUNTY FARMERS MARKET depends on YOU!

EAST SHELBY COUNTY FARMERS' MARKET NEWSLETTER JULY 23

COME VISIT US AT THE EAST SHELBY COUNTY FARMERS' MARKET

The Collierville (East Shelby County) Farmers' Market will be open from 11:30 until 7:00 this Thursday, July 23rd.

The first three farmers' markets have been a huge success for both the vendors and the customers! The first Thursday (July 2) most of the vendors sold out by 4:00! The second Thursday vendors were still selling strong at 6:00! Our third Thursday was hampered by rain but we still had a very large turn out. This Thursday (July 23) will hopefully be cool and sunny and gorgeous! Perfect weather to come buy from the Farmers' Market!

Please come and help us celebrate our one month anniversary!

We now have 14 vendors and our hours have been approved to be extended from 11:30 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. Please note: vendors are not allowed to sell before 11:30 a.m.

OUR FARMERS' MARKET WILL BE OPEN ON SATURDAYS STARTING AUGUST 1!
SATURDAY HOURS WILL BE 11:30 A.M. UNTIL 5:00 P.M.
On days the farmers' market is open we will be operating rain or shine.

BUTTERBEANS ARE IN! As well as green beans, eggplant, yellow tomatoes, cucumbers...(the list goes on and on!) The honey vendor is at the market now and we hope to soon have flowers available!

Our volunteer organization's goal is to please both the vendors and the customers buying at the market. We have tried to do this by listening to vendors' requests for a more streamlined approval process and to the public's request for extended sale hours. Please remember, everyone involved in this endeavor is volunteering their time and effort, please be patient and forbearing! But any and all suggestions are always welcome!

Buyers have shown local farmers that there is a viable market and public demand for fresh, nutritious, locally grown produce. And the buyers get to talk directly with the farmers about their growing methods, produce and farms!

East Shelby County Farmers Market - Newsletter #1 June 30, 2009***

Welcome to this first edition of East Shelby County Farmer's Market Newsletter.

The Collierville (East Shelby) Farmer's Market will be open from noon until 6pm this Thursday, July 2nd.

We are all excited. We have a lot to learn and many adjustments to make as we see which vendors will bring what produce, as we find out what you - the customers - want, and peruse where would be the best location on the square, at a future date, to have the market.

For now we are limited to what we can offer by town ordinance, available space, available vendors, and when the vendors can come and still meet their commitments to other farmers markets like the Red Barn, the Memphis Botanical Garden, etc. Please bear with us as we try to get this project off the ground - there will be things we have to tweak to get it just right - Thursday is just the first day!  Everyone involved in this endeavor is volunteering their time and effort, please be patient and forbearing!  But, any and all suggestions are always welcome!

Buyers have this wonderful opportunity to prove to local farmers that there is a viable market and public demand for fresh, nutritious, locally grown produce in Collierville. And the buyers get to talk directly with the farmers about their growing methods, produce and farms!

Its not impossible to imagine a large crowd buying the vendors out the first hour. That happened in two hours the day the Downtown Farmer's Market opened. But that just convinces the vendors to make a much bigger commitment to our market.  If that does happen, rest assured we will be flexible in rearranging our hours on Thursdays to enable as many buyers to enjoy the market as possible.

Tents (Canopies) are needed!

Wouldn't it be nice ambiance if the Farmer's Market had a row of tents set up along Washington St in the town parking lot - more than just a row of empty parking spaces? I will be there at 8am, Thursday,  to set up a canopy. It's a standard collapsible 10x10 canopy I set up to watch my granddarlings play ball. We need 8 more. LET ME,  cwhardeman@yahoo.com,  KNOW ASAP IF YOU CAN BRING YOURS THURSDAY MORNING and pick it up at 6pm.     Thanks!
Carl Hardeman
